People often ask me which comes first.. the words or the music? It’s a hard question to answer because for me, songwriting is a meditative process in which I’m actually challenging myself to understand a particular subject at a deep level – and discovering my own feelings may involve poetic or music, it just depends. Maybe I’ll play some riff or lick on an instrument.. or read something in a book, or hear something in a podcast or a movie that triggers a line of enquiry, or simply moves me to ponder. If the idea is for a lyric I’ll write it down; if it’s a musical idea, I’ll record it into my phone – gotta grab them before they get away! Sometimes the harmonic structure and melody lines appear before the words.. sometimes it’s the other way around and some form of poetry flows which may be formed into an appropriate structure for a song.

In the end, ‘songs’ are words set to music. In my case, those words are crucial to direct communication. For this reason all my albums have included the lyrics as part of the package and are there to allow listeners to hear, see and feel at the same time.
